WEIRTON - Mayor George J. Kondik is scheduled to deliver a state of the city address at noon Wednesday at the Millsop Community Center.

Some of the topics he plans to discuss include the development of the Jim Carey Stadium in conjunction with the West Virginia Community Development Hub; the possible development of an access road between Colliers Way and Three Springs Drive; the potential addition of office space and a retail outlet on the property across from Wal-Mart on Three Springs Drive; Pietro Fiorentini's future manufacturing facility at the industrial park; new housing starts of 2013; collaboration with the Business Development Corp., Brooke-Hancock-Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission and the Weirton Redevelopment Authority to redevelop the old post office on Pennsylvania Avenue; and several other subjects.

"I've always believed in communication, and I've had the luxury of communicating with City Council members openly," Kondik said of the city's progress in the past year. "Not only myself, but the city manager and department heads work closely together on all projects, big or small."

Most notably, Kondik hopes to update Weirton residents regarding the city's plan for the 2014 Municipal Home Rule application. If the city can obtain permission from the state Legislature, the Home Rule application could allow Weirton to pass laws or ordinances that are not specifically permitted within existing state legislation. This could potentially solve numerous problems arising from the city's unique geographical location between states.

"Our city is really beginning to turn a corner," Kondik noted. "After 20 years in local government, you learn that it comes down to the nitty gritty. We're finally starting to see the growth I've always hoped for."
