WEIRTON - In recent years, it has become a tradition of the Weirton United Way to honor one individual who has spent years selflessly dedicating themselves to assisting the organization and the community as a whole.

That honor was bestowed once again Friday, as Tom McDonald was named the recipient of this year's Don Donell Community Service Award.

Weirton United Way Executive Director Kristin Bowman-Cross announced the award during Friday's campaign report luncheon, explaining McDonald has spent many years working to organize the United Way's annual golf classic, serving as its chairman for three years, and has been a part of the campaign team for two years.

She added he always is willing to lend a hand, even when asked at the last moment.

"He is a crutch in times of need," Bowman-Cross said.

McDonald thanked the United Way for the award.

"It is a pleasure to serve. It truly is," McDonald said, adding the Weirton United Way's staff, executive board and campaign team make it easy for him.

Executive Board President John Frankovitch also congratulated McDonald, saying his service is an example to everyone, working hard while never asking for recognition.

"Tom McDonald really embodies everything about the United Way," Frankovitch said.

In its third year, the Don Donell award was created in memory of Donell, who was president of Starvaggi Industries and dedicated many years to the Weirton United Way. Donell died in 2011.
