WELLSBURG - Brooke's girls overcame an early deficit and coasted to a 56-37 victory over Oak Glen Thursday inside the Wellness Center.

Down 14-11 after one, the Lady Bruins outscored their guests 16-6 in the second and led 27-20 at the break. Ryan Scherich's club reeled off eight straight to the start the third and never looked back.

"This was a great win for us, especially since we are down a starter and our first player off the bench," Scherich said. "It's a nice one to get with two key players injured."

FIGHT FOR THE BALL — Oak Glen’s Maise Winthrow is surrounded by Brooke’s Courtney Kosevic (43), Payge Farmer (11) and Angela Staffileno during the fourth quarter of Thursday’s 56-37 win by the Bruins. Looking on is the Golden Bears’ Jessica Stivason.

Angela Staffileno had another monster game for the Bruins, now 3-8. The junior standout finished with 30 points and 18 rebounds to record yet another double-double. Staffileno accounted for all 11 of Brooke's first-quarter tallies.

She and senior Michaela Hinerman helped Brooke grab the lead for good just before the half with seven makes from the charity stripe.

Sophomore Payge Farmer knocked down two triples early in the third and freshman Gabby Velegol added a deuce. Following a Farmer hoop, Oak Glen scored six straight to cut its deficit to 12 (39-27). Staffileno tallied four from the paint to make it 43-27 Brooke heading into the fourth.

Four points from freshman Kelsey Wensyl and a Staffileno triple extended Brooke's lead to 54-32 late in the contest.

"I think we got them out of their game a little with the way we played defense tonight," Scherich noted. "Good defense usually leads to good offense and that happened for us.

"Offensively, we shared the ball well. The girls found the open player and generally Angela (Staffileno) was that open player and they were feeding her the ball."

Farmer finished with 10, all coming in the second half. Hinerman added four and dished out a half dozen assists.

"Paige (Farmer) is coming along lately," Scherich added. "She scored 11 in our game against Wheeling Park and scored some last night against Linsly. She's starting to score like I expected her to when the season started.

"Michaela (Hinerman) has some really nice passes and she never quits. She goes 100 miles an hour and hustles all the time."

Oak Glen, which used an 8-0 run to take its first quarter lead, was led in scoring by Logan Andrews with 10. Jessica Stivason added nine and Maise Withrow eight.

"I told them after the game they are going to have nights like this," coach Scott Wiley commented. "The ball just didn't fall for us in the second half. Some of those shots we would normally make but not tonight.

"When you get behind, it makes it hard. You try to do different things but nothing seemed to work for us. We had a couple of nice runs but we couldn't sustain them. I don't know if someone put something over the hoop because the shots just wouldn't fall for us."

Vanessa Hissam grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Lady Bears, now 7-4. Stivason accounted for eight.

After playing three games on the road, Oak Glen returns home for four straight, starting Saturday against Toronto. Brooke returns to action Wednesday at Morgantown.
