MARTINS FERRY - Martins Ferry lost an overtime heartbreaker on its trip to Edison early this season.

The Purple Riders made certain the rematch wasn't close.

Playing a "near-perfect" first half, the homestanding Purple Riders defeated the Wildcats 82-52 Tuesday. The Purple Riders put 53 points on the board by halftime.

The win was the fifth in 11 starts for the improving Riders.

Nate Moses' Wildcats fell to 3-8. Edison welcomes Bellaire Saturday.

"We played a near perfect first half," Martins Ferry coach Jeff Sabatino said. "We came out with incredible energy and executed everything. It makes you wonder whey you can't play that way every night out.

"We played at a fevered pitch and everyone contributed. We lost a little focus in the second half, but that is understandable up by 30 at halftime."

Ferry received outstanding contributions from a handful of players, none more than Robert Vargo. The all-state gridder poured in 28 points to go with 15 boards and six blocks. The 6-foot-6 powerful post player delivered 21 points prior to intermission.

Sophomore Arjay Burress, an all-Ohio running back, continued his strong play with 23 points while sophomore James Edwards dropped in 18 points.

Jake Barritt ran the Purple offensive onslaught flawlessly. The 5-foot-8 junior dished out 16 assists to go with six points. Sophomore Emilio Appolloni had four points, five assists and seven rebounds before leaving with a head injury.

The Purple Riders imposed their will on the outmanned Wildcats immediately, jumping out to a 7-0 lead. The hosts were up 17-7 after the initial quarter as all five starters found the scoring column.

Ferry will be hard-pressed to play a better second quarter than the one it exhibited last night. The Riders dropped a 36-spot on Edison en route to a 53-20 halftime bulge.

Vargo fueled the run with 13 points while Edwards and Burress netted 11 and 10 markers, respectively.

The third quarter was no kinder to Edison as Ferry pushed its advantage to 71-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

"Martins Ferry deserves all the credit for an outstanding performance. They were hitting on all cylinders," Moses said. "We have a hard time when we go on the road and that continued tonight. I was happy, however, with how our young kids handled themselves in the second quarter. They gave us a spark."

Edison had two players reach double figures. Skylar Wilkin led the Wildcats with 16 points while Dylan Jones added 10.
