DILLONVALE - One of two new members of the Buckeye Local School District Board of Education was elected president of the board by a 3-2 vote during Wednesday's organizational meeting.

James Cesario, who was elected to the board in Novemeber, was nominated for board president by fellow newcomer Dirk Pielech.

Board member Brad McFadden was then nominated for the seat by board member Naoma Kolkedy.

Cesario cast a vote for himself, as did Joe Zelek and Pielech. Voting against Cesario's nomination were Kolkedy and McFadden.

There was no vote recorded concerning McFadden, because of the simple majority in favor of Cesario.

Officials noted most candidates abstain from voting when their name is in the mix for election to the position, though there is no regulation preventing a nominee from voting for him or herself.

In a related matter, board member salary levels on a per meeting basis were passed unanimously at the maximum amount permissible by law, for a maximum of 22 meetings per year. The maximum salary for a board member could reach $2,750, based on a per meeting rate of $125, regardless he or she attends a regular or special meeting.

School board members are eligible to purchase insurance through the school district, and earn service credit toward the pension programs of the State Employee Retirement Service.

Board members voted to again establish a service fund of $7,500 from which all members can be compensated for certain board business-related expenditures, said Superintendent Mark Miller.

Board members also approved meeting dates for the coming year. Each meeting will begin at 6 p.m. The schedule includes: Feb. 24, administration offices; March 24, Rayland City Building; April 28, Buckeye Local High School; May 19, Yorkville City Building; June 23, administration offices; July 28, (tentative) administration offices; Aug. 11, administration offices; Sept. 22, South Elementary; Oct. 27, Smithfield Township, Adena Fire Hall; Nov. 24, North Elementary; and Dec. 15, West Elementary.
