STEUBENVILLE City Council listened to arguments for and against a proposed water rate hike and then approved the legislation Tuesday night by a 5 to 2 margin.
The council passed the third and final reading of two ordinances raising water rates by a minimum $6.50 a month for all city water customers and establishing a water infrastructure improvement fund following a two hour town hall meeting held at Eastern Gateway Community College.
The council also approved a new table of organization for city employees to reflect a 2.75 percent pay raise for fire department employees.
A 13 month contract was approved in December for the International Association of Firefighters Local 228.
In other business Tuesday night the council heard the second reading of an ordinance creating regulations for vacant properties in the city.
The council also heard the second readings for legislation regarding the city building code.
And a second reading was heard for an ordinance approving a purchase order for more than $3,000.
