Lloyd to play in showcase

KENT - Steubenville Catholic Central's Megan Lloyd will compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase North at Kent State University today and Sunday. It is her fourth year in the showcase.

Now in its 19th season, the QDSN is part of the Queen of Diamond's Showcase events which are the largest fastpitch softball showcases of their kind in the U.S.

Lloyd is a pitcher and plays first base for the Crusaders. She plays travel ball for the Pittsburgh Silver Creek Starz.

Spartans split games

The St. Joseph Spartans JV basketball team defeated St. John's Junior Irish Green, 31-24, in Wheeling Parochial League action. The Spartans were paced by Evan Boniti's 27 points, which included five 3-pointers. Angelo Quattrochi added four points for St. Joe's.

At home, the Spartans were defeated by St. Vincent, 46-30. Boniti again led the scoring for St. Joe's with 13 points, while Vinnie Conforti added six and Nick Cekinovich had four points in the loss.

Umps to hold classes

STEUBENVILLE - The Steubenville Umpires Association will conduct a baseball and softball umpires training class beginning in January.

Successful completion of the class will prepare students to take the baseball and softball umpires tests administered by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Passing those tests will make individuals licensed officials in Ohio, which will allow them to officiate high school baseball and softball games.

Big Red boosters to meet

STEUBENVILLE - The Big Red Boosters Club will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the high school conference room. All are welcome. Memberships are available.

Free throw contest to he held

STEUBENVILLE - The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is open to all boys and girls ages 10 to 14. Participants will compete in their respective age divisions and winners will progress through local, district, regional and state competitions.

It will be held Jan. 18 at the gymnasium on Lovers Lane at the former Aquinas Elementary School. Registration and warm-ups will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The competition will start at 1:30 p.m. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent.
