Steubenville wrestling contains Oak Glen, Edison in impressive fashion

RICHMOND - Steubenville Big Red and Oak Glen traveled to Edison High School Wednesday for a wrestling tri-match with the Wildcats. When the dust settled Big Red came away with a pair of impressive victories, knocking off the Golden Bears 46-24 before claiming a 54-18 win over the hosts.

"Coming out and getting two wins is always good when you're young," said Big Red head coach Mike Blackburn. "There're no seniors in our lineup and two juniors, so we're pretty young this year. I think overall we wrestled pretty good. There were a couple surprises for us, a couple starters were out, and some young guys stepped in and wrestled pretty well. We had some upsets for sure."

Though they had some of their freshmen and sophomores step up, a pair of juniors set the tone for Steubenville.

"Some of our veteran guys wrestled well," said Blackburn. "Tariq (Wilson) had a forfeit, but he wrestled well in his first match. Dakota (Goff) went 2-0 to help us. I think overall it was a terrific team effort."

Wilson and Goff opened things up with back-to-back wins for Big Red against Oak Glen with Wilson securing a pin and Goff claiming a 4-0 decision. Goff picked up a pin of his own in his team's second match against Edison.

Before Oak Glen fell to Big Red it claimed a 58-18 win over Edison in the first match of the evening.

"I think we performed up and down," said Oak Glen head coach Patrick McGillan. "We came out good against Edison and wrestled well. Against Steubenville we came out, knew we couldn't give up any bonus points and gave up too many.

"As a team, we've been wrestling well. We're 6-1 in dual meets. We're well ahead of what I expected. They (Big Red) are probably the best team in the OVAC and we were within 20 points. Without bonus points it's a lot closer.

"I'm sure we'll see them in the OVAC Duals somewhere."

The Golden Bears' smallest wrestler has been their most impressive as junior Ryan DeBee came away with a pair of pins and remains undefeated on the year.

"Ryan DeBee, our 106-pounder, is a junior and is 12-0 right now with 11 pins," said McGillan. "He's been working real hard for us and I'm happy with him."

Though it was a tough night for the Wildcats with the pair of losses, head coach William Koehnlein felt his team performed well despite being shorthanded against two of the best wrestling teams in the OVAC.

"We had a few guys out of the lineup," he said. "Our 126 pound, Robert Daley, broke his wrist. Our 138, Will Scholl, has a concussion. Our 145, Nick Fisher, has a skin issue.

"We definitely didn't have the complete lineup that we would like to have.

"We had to deal with some adversity there. Overall I think my guys battled. We have a young team. We're always looking to wrestle the better schools like Oak Glen and Steubenville Big Red so we gave our best effort and we're just looking to get better."

A standout for the Wildcats was Mitchell Wells, who earned a pin against Oak Glen and a 12-6 decision against Big Red.

"Mitchell is 16-0 now," said Koehnlein. "He was third at OVAC last year. He's been wrestling well. He won the Union Local Rick Link Tournament. He won the Hoppel Tournament.

"He's having a good season so far. He's just trying to keep improving and working toward OVAC."
