FUS men victorious

STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's basketball team beat visiting D'Youville College, 80-77, Sunday in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action.

Freshman Garrison Holmes gave the Barons a 78-77 lead after a free throw with a minute remaining on the clock. The Spartans had one last shot with five seconds left, but FUS center Joe Rine blocked the shot to secure the win. Daniel Kleinschnitz netted the last two points from the line.

"The biggest play was Joe's block," head coach John Lamana said. "The fact of the matter was that we had to get a defensive stop to put us over the top and we did so by having a huge play by Joe.

"It was just gigantic."

Timmy Schenk led the win with 21 points. Holmes added 19, Kleinschnitz 10 and six steals and Rine 13 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks.

"I am just really proud of our players," Lamana said. "They really showed great resiliency and just they didn't have any quit in them. They could have really easily after we let D'Youville back into the game and off of yesterday's emotional loss, it could have gone either way. I am very proud of how hard they continue to compete."

The Barons visit Muskingum on Jan. 2.

Lady Barons drop close one

STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan University of Steubenville women's basketball team dropped a 59-55 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest to visiting D'Youville College on Sunday.

"I'm very proud of each and every one of those girls, they battled those whole 40 minutes," head coach Suzy Delaney said. "It's a tough loss, but we talked to the girls about learning from the experience each time we take the floor and using those experiences to get better as a team and as an individual."

The Lady Barons played most of the game with five players after freshman guard Lauren Shaffer went down with an injury in the first half.

FUS held a 37-27 lead at the break. Captain Lacey Huck led the offensive charge with 17 points and 17 rebounds.

The Barons host Geneva College at 3 p.m. Dec. 31.
