Winter is coming, and many homeless pets find themselves cold, hungry and trying to survive in the elements. For the lucky ones, help is found at the Hancock County Animal Shelter in New Manchester, West Virginia, according to a shelter spokesperson.

An influx of dogs and cats has filled shelter cages and space, prompting shelter foundation board members to offer an adoption incentive during the holiday season.

It began Dec. 7 and continues until Jan. 2, adoption fees for adult dogs over 1 year old are lowered to $100, and special adoption rates for senior dogs over 5 years old will continue at $50.

The adoption fees cover a spay/neuter procedure for the dog, plus all vaccinations and testing for common diseases. In addition, the shelter foundation also offers incentives for those who want to adopt one of the many cats and kittens now at the shelter. Adoption fees for kittens are $75, adult cats over 1 year old are $50, and senior cats can be adopted for $25.

The Hancock County Animal Shelter Foundation is a nonprofit organization, which operates the county animal shelter through a contract with the Hancock County Commission.

"Countless dogs need love and companionship, and the shelter could be the place where you find the perfect family pet. The shelter hopes a price incentive will encourage you to make a difference in a dog's life, plus your money helps to keep the shelter up and running, caring for homeless pets, and saving lives," the spokesperson said.

The Hancock County Animal Shelter, located on Gas Valley Road in New Manchester, is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
