STEUBENVILLE - Today is the final day to register to participate in the 2013 Sights and Sounds Christmas parade.
According to Judy Bratten of the Steubenville Visitors Center, applications can be picked up at the Historic Fort Steuben Visitors Center or printed off the website, www.visitsteubenville.com. No applications will be accepted after today.
The annual Christmas parade is set for Dec. 7. The Steubenville Events Committee has chosen to honor veterans in this year's parade, with those from Steubenville to serve as the grand marshals.
Members of AMVETS, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts 33 and 274 will lead off the parade on a special float headed by a color guard from the Adena American Legion. Other military units from around the area will participate in the parade with a variety of vehicles and floats.
At least four high school bands will fill the air with Christmas music, and spectators will enjoy performances by Brenda Casey Dance Center, Generations of Steppaz, Ohio Valley Dance & Twirlers and more entertainers.
Bratten said more than 80 floats and units from organizations, businesses and clubs will spark the holiday spirit and add to the excitement of ushering in Santa Claus.
"The parade will be staged on North Fourth Street and will officially start at the North Street and North Fourth Street intersection at noon. We are asking residents and businesses to keep North Fourth Street clear that morning so the various floats and vehicles can get in line for the parade," said Bratten.
She noted Eastern Gateway Community College will be the title sponsor of this year's event and will feature the EGCC Gator in the parade.
"We are grateful to Jefferson Security, the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors for volunteering to assist with the parade on that day. Mayor Domenick Mucci has donated funds to have off-duty police officers on hand as well," added Bratten.
