Ohio Valley a special place

November 10, 2013
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

At this time of year, I like to count my blessings.

I just spent two fabulous weeks this summer in the Ohio Valley, and though I grew up there, I must admit that I never really appreciated how absolutely beautiful it is. Everything was so lush green and the summer flowers were a sight to behold, but the real beauty of the valley is the wonderful, genuine people who live there.

I was raised in Wintersville in the 1940s and 1950s, but I have lived in south Florida for the past 48 years. You would think that after being gone for almost 50 years that I would be a forgotten soul, but not so with my incredibly loyal, loving and caring friends.

Each one of them makes me feel so special and loved. When we would be together, we would walk down memory lane, and I shall forever treasure each and every warm and fuzzy memory that we shared from the past.

It just seems like yesterday that we were walking into Cozy Corner, and Pop Gambil would be preparing his world-famous hot dogs and a yummy banana split for the after-school gang.

At night, we would all head for Coe's Drive-In Restaurant, where Dick Bills would be creating the most delicious sandwich I have ever eaten in my whole 73 years - the BLIM.

After leaving Coe's, we would go to the Sunset Auto Drive-In Theater, where we would watch the latest '50s flicks - what fun that was.

As the songwriter says, those were the days, my friend, I thought they'd never end, but, unfortunately, they did end in real life, but each and every precious memory will be stored in my heart forever.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my wonderful friends for, once again, reminding me of how blessed I am to have been raised in the best place in the whole world - the Ohio Valley.

My hometown is now, and will always be, my Camelot.
