Truck driver's death being investigation

SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP - Officials with the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating whether a medical condition led to the death of a truck driver whose tractor-trailer overturned on state Route 151 at about 3:50 p.m. Thursday.

The highway patrol reported Wilbur B. Birney, 69, of 44225 Rumley Road, Jewett, was transporting a load of hay bales when the vehicle overturned at a bend in the highway and into a guardrail there.

Birney was extricated from the truck by Smithfield firefighters and transported to East Ohio Regional Medical Center by the Dillonvale Emergency Medical Service.

The highway was closed for about four hours while crews responded to the accident and removed the truck.

Man in wheelchair struck by vehicle

STEUBENVILLE - A Steubenville man was transported by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh area hospital after a pickup truck collided with him in his wheelchair in the crosswalk at the intersection of Third and Washington streets at about 1 p.m. Thursday.

According to City Police, Charles Wedlake, 72, of 707 Market St., sustained injuries to his left arm and hand and cuts to his legs and head but was conscious prior to his transport. His condition isn't known.

The driver of the pickup truck - Nicholas Beeler, 34, of Youngstown - was cited for failure to yield.

According to police reports, Beeler told police he went from the scene to his workplace nearby, where he called 911, then returned.

Beeler is slated to appear in Municipal Court Thursday.

Two transported following accident

STEUBENVILLE - Two area women were transported to Trinity Medical Center West following a collision in which one vehicle struck a home near the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Bryden Road Thursday.

According to reports by City Police, Fernanda B. Capaldi, 67, of 606 Pine Valley Drive, Steubenville, and Jenna L. Allogia, 23, of 4028 state Route 152, Richmond, were transported to the hospital following the accident, which occurred at about 7:55 p.m.

Both were treated and released from the hospital.

According to the reports, Capaldi pulled from a business into the path of Allogia's vehicle and veered across the highway and into the house.

Capaldi has been cited for failure to yield.

Psychic fair slated at mall

STEUBENVILLE - The Steubenville Psychic, Spiritual and Paranormal Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday in center court of the Fort Steuben Mall.

There will be several specialists on hand to teach guests how to read tarot and angel cards, reach out to the those who have passed and more.
