ST. CLAIRSVILLE - The Minerva midfield delivered five goals and three assists to lead the Lions girls soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Cambridge in an Ohio Division II Eastern District sectional semifinal Wednesday night at Red Devil Stadium.

Senior Lauren Haynman netted a hat trick, sophomore Josie Chaddock contributed a goal and three assists and senior Maddie Siedsclaw contributed a goal for the Lions (9-5-3).

Senior forward Erica McCauley collected a goal, and senior forward Harriet Whitsel tallied an assist.

"We played well," Minerva head coach Nicole Chaddock said. "We played as a team. We got back to our passing game. Our girls didn't panic. They were disciplined."

Minerva will play Carrollton in the sectional co-final at 2 p.m. Saturday on the same turf. Carrollton advanced to the co-final by shutting out Big Red, 1-0, in Wednesday's first semifinal match.

"The girls are excited," coach Chaddock said. "We want this. We have worked hard all season to get here."

Junior goalie Caitlin Rodgers made five saves for the Lions.

"Give credit to Cambridge," coach Chaddock said. "No. 11 did a great job tonight. She played tough tonight. She just didn't have much support."

Minerva was able to see some of the game between Big Red and the Warriors.

"We know No. 1 is quick," she said. "They are pretty physical."

Edison will play Beaver Local in the first sectional co-final of the day at noon.

The Beavers defeated the Wildcats in a shootout last season in the sectional co-final. In 2011, Edison defeated Beaver Local in double overtime to win the district championship.
