La’Femme Progressive Club plans annual jazz concert for Saturday

The La'Femme Progressive Club of Federated Colored Women will present its annual jazz concert on Saturday at the Center of Music and Art, 264 Main St., Wintersville, beginning at 7 p.m.

National recording artist Kevin Howard will be the guest musician.

Howard is a "world-class keyboardist, writer, composer, producer and businessman" who was born and raised in Pittsburgh, according to promotional material. He is president and chief executive officer of Key Chapter Entertainment, a company that offers full-service recording and production.

Among his awards are three "Best Jazz Performer Awards" from local urban radio station WAMO; the WQED Harry Schwab Excellence in the Arts Award; Best Jazz Performer Champions Association; and Pittsburgh City Paper top three jazz performers.

Howard and his band served as Pittsburgh's WJJJ Smooth Jazz Band for more than two years, performing at various events sponsored by the radio station.

Howard has recorded and performed with saxophonist Marion Meadows, Norman Connors, Lonnie Liston Smith, Najee and George Benson and has shared the stage with Roy Ayers, Pieces of a Dream, Joe McBride and John Legend. He has headlined concerts in Parkersburg's Jazz on the Green and Mid-Ohio Valley Multicultural Festival, Jazz Under the Stars in Harrisburg, Pa., for the National Urban League Convention and other venues.

He has three CDs to his credit - "Random Groove," "Collage" and Special Edition" - and is in production on a fourth.

Tickets are $25 and available in advance from any member of the club or by calling (740) 283-2424, (740) 264-4835 or (304) 748-0250. They also will be available at the door.

Light refreshments will be served with the purchase of the ticket.

Carrie Campbell is president of the club. Cheryl Gory and Jean Isler are co-chairpersons with the event committee including Pat Bailey, Lucille Bridgeman, Carrie Campbell, Terri Bass, Keisha Bass, Byrdie Owens, Connie Vinson, Carol Ann Simmons, Mary Jane Thomas and Eileen Reeves.
