The Herald-Star

The Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Sept. 14 at Old Fort Steuben with Regent Nancy Valles presiding.

JoAnn Morrison, Second Vice Regent Denese White and Carol Skerbetz led in opening exercises.

Following lunch, Ohio State Regent Sandra McCann presented the program "Founding Mothers," based on Cokie Roberts' book. She spoke about Debra Franklin, Eliza Lucas Pinkley and Katherine Littlefield Green, all of whom aided their husbands in the Revolutionary War effort.

During the business session, reports were given by Vickie Joseph and Beverly Livingston, treasurer.

Skerbetz, Morrison, Clare Vosteen and Phyllis Kuhns volunteered to be on the Nominating Committee.

Morrison, regent from 2010-13, was given a past regent pin.

Prospective members Jeannie Vega, Tammy Kotyk, Janet Patterson and Nicole Balakos were in attendance.

Sandy McCann reported on the Celebrate America Committee. President General Lynn Young asked DAR members to do 1 million hours of community service, averaging out to six hours per member, each year. Each chapter will report the number of hours members have volunteered.

Opal Kleineke gave the National Defense Report about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and tribute. She asked members to take the time to thank a Vietnam veteran.

Vickie Joseph gave the Women's Issues Report about helpful sleep hints.

The Waldschmidt Homestead trustees are selling tickets for a quilt. The tickets are one for $1 and six for $5. Skerbetz volunteered to chair the sales.

Joseph read thank-you notes from scholarship winners Harry Olenick and Brandon Llewellyn. She also requested help with the names of schools that would be interested in taking part in the Junior American Citizens contest. Skerbetz gave the invocation. The next meeting will be held Oct. 12 at the University Boulevard Best Western Inn.
