BLOOMINGDALE - The choice of a new superintendent was discussed during Tuesday's Jefferson County Joint Vocational School Board meeting.

Current JVS Superintendent Dale Edwards announced his resignation effective Jan. 1, and board members had the choice of choosing from three qualified candidates currently working at the JVS or seeking an outside replacement.

After a lengthy executive session by board members, Larry George, board president, indicated members were inclined to choose from the candidates currently employed at the vocational school.

"... It's in the boards plan to name the next superintendent as early as the next board meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 15," Edwards said.

The board spent two-thirds of Tuesday's meeting in executive session to discuss the issue. Edwards said he believes all three candidates are qualified for the position, although he isn't making any recommendations.

"Myself and Treasurer Karen Spoonemore were not part of the executive session," said Edwards.

In other matters:

The JVS has been invited to be part of the Business Resource Network.

"The reason was because of our work force training programs," said Edwards, adding the network works to share information about potential intern and job positions for students and employers. "

Cindy Baran, JVS English teacher, wrote a proposal for and received a $2,000 youth literacy grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. She will use the funds to purchase literacy resources for her classroom, he added.

The board agreed to support the Edison Local School District's 5.9-mill, current expenses levy on the Nov. 5 ballot.

There will be an open house held from 3:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 25 at the JVS, according to Edwards.
