STEUBENVILLE - Criminal charges are expected to be filed today against 18-year-old Dallas M. Crokie, who is accused of stabbing a 40-year-old city man to death sometime Sunday night or early Monday morning.

Crokie surrendered to authorities at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department Monday morning and said he had stabbed Terry L. Shust at his residence at Apartment 1B the Cathedral Apartments at 416 S. Sixth St.

Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said Crokie had a knife with him that he gave a deputy. The investigation was turned over to Steubenville Police.

"He (Crokie) straight up admitted it," Abdalla said.

The sheriff said Crokie claimed there was an altercation between Shust and himself.

Abdalla said Crokie was "beaten up a little bit."

Police Chief Bill McCafferty said it appears to investigators "some sort of struggling occurred either before or during the stabbing."

McCafferty did not cite a reason for the fatal stabbing.

"Our detectives are investigating the case. We have talked to the county prosecutor's office and expect charges to be filed soon," said McCafferty.

It isn't known if Crokie has an attorney representing him yet.

This is the sixth murder in the city this year.
