City man arrested after car chase

STEUBENVILLE - A city man was arrested following a high-speed chase that traversed both hilltops Thursday evening, City Police reported.

An officer tried to pull over a car on the Wellesley Avenue Extension around 9:22 p.m. for a traffic violation when it accelerated at a high rate of speed. The officer followed the vehicle across Labelle View onto Pleasant Heights, police reported.

The driver drove onto West Market Alley and stopped, where the officer ordered him out of the car and onto the ground, police reported.

Robert G. Washington, 42, of 407 Lawson Ave. was charged with fleeing and eluding, failure to signal turn, reckless operation, stop sign and a bench warrant out of municipal court.

City man sentenced in probation, drug case

STEUBENVILLE - Rick L. Noviski Jr., 35, of 613 Pine St. was sentenced to 14 months in prison on Thursday by Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. after Noviski pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine and admitted to a probation revocation.

Noviski was stopped on June 5 by City Police on North Seventh Street and crack cocaine was found in his possession.

Noviski was sentenced to 182 days in jail in October 2011 after pleading guilty to aggravated assault. Noviski then failed to report to his probation officer.

Road closed for culvert work

IRONDALE - Knox Township Road 344 will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday for a culvert replacement.

Man charged following accident

BEECH BOTTOM - A Yorkville man has been charged with driving under the influence causing injury and failure to maintain control following a two-vehicle accident at about 6 a.m. Wednesday on state Route 2.

Paul J. Lukas, 53, of 311 Sinclair Ave., Yorkville, faces the charges after his vehicle veered into the path of a vehicle in the opposite lane, according to the Brooke County Sheriff's Department.

The driver of the other vehicle was a woman, and her name wasn't available. She was transported to an area hospital by ambulance.

Wellsburg Police and several fire departments also responded to the accident.

Juvenile apprehended following incident

WELLSBURG - A juvenile has been referred to Brooke County's juvenile justice system after allegedly screaming obscenities while in his underwear on 25th Street at about 6:25 p.m. Wednesday.

According to police reports, Brooke County sheriff's deputies told the youth, whose name hasn't been released, to stop screaming, but he refused and attempted to flee, slipped on the pavement and fell to the ground.

According to the reports, the youth continued to resist arrest and swear at the deputies as they handcuffed him.

The deputies said the youth appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
