William Fields

FIELDS, William Robert "Bill," 88, of New Cumberland, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 3, 2013.

Born on February 10, 1925, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, he was the son of the late Rev. Allen and Edna Chambers Fields Sr.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Joy Fields; two brothers, Allen Fields Jr. and Oreon Fields.

Bill was a decorated U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a gunners' mate on landing craft on both D-Day at Omaha Beach and during the invasion of Iwo Jima, where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.

Bill was a graduate of New Cumberland High School, Class of 1943, and the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. He worked for many years in the Blast Furnace Electric department of Weirton Steel, retiring as a turn foreman. He also assisted his brother Allen in operating Fields Funeral Home in New Cumberland.

He was a 75-year member and an Elder Emeritus of the New Cumberland Christian Church, where he served as Sunday School superintendent, a deacon, and an elder for many years. He was a member of the New Cumberland VFW (70 years), the New Cumberland Lodge No. 22 A.F.& A.M. (60 years), and the Lions Club (45 years). He was inducted into the New Cumberland Hall of Fame this past February.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 67 years, Emily Cullen Fields of New Cumberland; a daughter, Diane (Rev. Kevin) Bowers of New Cumberland; a son, Greg (Kathy) Fields of Houston, TX; four grandsons, Will, Ben, John and Scott; a sister, Catherine Hudson of New Cumberland; two sisters-in-law, Janet Fields of Weirton and Gay Fields of New Cumberland; and a supportive and loving circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held at the Nixon Funeral Home in New Cumberland on Friday, September 6, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the New Cumberland Christian Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2013. Rev. Kevin Bowers, Rev. Kenneth Joy and Rev. Rick Tinsky will officiate. Burial will follow at New Cumberland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the William Fields Memorial Fund at the New Cumberland Christian Church.
