The 2013-14 campaign cabinet for the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley has set its goal at $777,777.

Jim Rock of Axiall, campaign chair, and Kristie Barnett of WesBanco, campaign vice chair, announced the goal during the cabinet's first meeting.

"The previous campaign totalled $758,612, so we believe that our goal of $777,777 is a realistic target that we can achieve and exceed," Rock said.

Based in Wheeling, the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley merged with the Brooke County United Way several years ago and supports many nonprofit organizations that serve Brooke County. They include the Brooke County Committee on Aging, which oversees the Brooke County Senior Center; Brooke County Public Library; Weirton and Wellsburg Salvation Army; and Healthways.

During the meeting, P.J. Reindel, director of Catholic Charities 18th Street Neighborhood Center and United Way agency liaison to its board of directors, discussed what the United Way's support means to the 30 member agencies.

He also outlined how his agency serves its clients.

"Now multiply all that work times 30, and you get an idea of how much the United Way agencies serve our community," Rock told the cabinet.

Rock served as the campaign vice chair during the 2012-13 campaign. Barnett served on the cabinet in past campaigns, and as vice chair this year, will be prepared to assume the chair's post in the 2014-15 campaign.

The cabinet members will work with volunteers within their divisions to distribute campaign materials to area businesses and industries and to help with company campaigns.

Other cabinet members heading various committees are Dan Moyer of American Electric Power Kammer Mitchell Plant and Jacque Bland of Chesapeake Energy, major firms; Mark Maguire of WesBanco, local business; Jeffrey B. Knierim of West Liberty University, public service; Stuart F. Bloch of Hazlett, Burt & Watson, special accounts; Bradley K. Shafer of Swartz Campbell LLC and Daniel Young of Edward Jones Investments, professional; Mary K. DeGarmo and Steve Roberts of Eagle Manufacturing, Brooke County; Dave Palmer, community development; and past chairman Judy Riesbeck Wright of Riesbeck Food Markets Inc.

The campaign officially will begin during the Day of Caring, Sept. 11, at WesBanco Arena.

During the Day of Caring, area businesses show their support of the United Way by allowing designated employees to serve at various United Way agencies instead of reporting to work.

United Way leaders said the tasks performed change from year to year based on the needs of the agencies. The nonprofit agency receives much needed help and the volunteers receive the feeling of making a difference in the lives of others.
