Dr. Barbara Matey

MATEY, Dr. Barbara Ann, 65, of Weirton died Sunday, September 1, 2013, at the Valley Hospice North Care Center in Steubenville, Ohio.

Barbara was born August 6, 1948, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late Charles and Pauline (Hreha) Tokar. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Joy Yetman and brother-in-law, John Saxon.

After graduation from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Barbara accepted a position as a teacher in the South Allegheny School District in McKeesport, PA.

She continued her education at the University of Pittsburgh where she earned a Master's in Education 1972, and later, earned her Doctorate of Education in Technology Education from West Virginia University.

She worked in various capacities for West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) and the former Weirton Steel Corporation. Her positions included faculty, public relations, business and industrial training, and program coordination at WVNCC. Within the mill, she worked in training and process reengineering for the commercial department, business information technologies department, integrated manufacturing, and various training capacities.

In November 2001, she found her employment home with Hancock County Savings Bank, FSB. She was currently serving as Vice President of Human Resources.

Her recent service included a multi-year member of the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce on which she chaired the Education Committee, chairing the Youth Leadership Program and chairing the high School Business Symposium. Additionally, Dr. Matey served as a board member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for the Wheeling area Chapter; chaired the Women's Golf Classic for the Weirton United Way as well as many other United Way volunteer projects. She served as a volunteer and annual bell ringer with Arthur for the Salvation Army. She further volunteered as a member of Hancock County Sheltered Workshop, Hancock County Animal Shelter, Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, Business Department Advisory Council at the Rockefeller Career Center, HCSB's Partner in Education Program. Dr. Matey also taught parent education classes such as budgeting to Head Start parents and served as a board member of Campfire Girls.

Her commitment to her community was second only to her passion for her church family of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church. A multi-term member of the parish council serving often as Secretary of Council, multi-term member of the Board of Directors of the Serbian American Cultural Center in Weirton, often holding the office of the Secretary of the Board; a member of the Church's Petar Krstich Choir.

She leaves to mourn her devoted husband, Arthur Matey; whom she married on July 12, 1980; her brother in law, Eugene (Anna Mae) Matey and their children Eric and Renee'(Wes Stokes); sister-in-law, Nancy Saxon, and her children, John (Natalie) and Richard (Noreen) and their children. Her godchildren and caregivers, Nicole Balakos and Denise Stewart and their families; as well as many devoted friends, coworkers and extended family members.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the at Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, 528 North Fourth St., Steubenville, Ohio.

Pomen Services will be held 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the church.

Additional visitation will be Wednesday 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. at the church.

Interment will follow at the Serbian Cemetery in Weirton.
