TORONTO - Tuesday marks the beginning of classes for city school district pupils and students, as well as being the first day for the district's new building housing grades six through 12.

Preschoolers and kindergarten pupils will begin school on Thursday, according to school officials. The 3-year-old preschoolers will attend on Mondays and Wednesdays all day and Friday mornings. The 4-year-old preschoolers will attend Tuesdays and Thursdays all day and Friday afternoons.

"These changes began last year and are required because preschool rules now mandate equal hours for all preschoolers," according to Fred Burns, district superintendent. "Busing at the noon hour will be provided on Fridays for preschoolers coming and departing.

"We're continuing in two buildings," continued Burns. "Karaffa Elementary School will be pre-schoolers and our new Toronto Junior/Senior High School will house grades six through 12."

Students new to Toronto City Schools are urged to register if they have not yet done so, Burns continued, adding this can be done between 9 a.m. and noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. prior to Tuesday.

Hours at the high school will be from 7:35 a.m. to 2:36 p.m., while hours at Karaffa will run from 8:20 a.m. to 2:55 p.m.

"Parents are also reminded the cafeterias will be open on the first day of school," said Burns. "Type A lunches for pupils in grades preschool though fifth grade are $2.25 with grades six through 12 costing $2.50. Milk at all schools will be 40 cents per half pint."

Burns said schedules and bus stops are being finalized and currently are posted on the website.

Students and pupils are requested to be at their designated stops at least five minutes prior to their designated pick-up time.

Parents are advised it may be necessary to revise some of the bus routes and time schedules during the first week of school if unforeseen conflicts develop, according to Burns.

Preschool and kindergarten pupils must be 3, 4 and 5 years of age, respectfully, on or before Aug. 1 to be eligible for enrollment.

A birth certificate, Social Security card and immunization record must be presented at the time of registration.

All pupils and students students must be fully immunized against measles, diphtheria, whooping cough and polio, and children younger than age 5 must have the H. I. B. vaccine, said Burns.

Parents are reminded that free immunizations may be obtained at the Toronto Health Department in the Toronto Municipal Building.

Karaffa pupils waking to school will include pupils residing south of Karaffa Elementary School to state Route 7 access from the Ohio River on the east to state Route 7 on the west.

All walking pupils from Daniels Street on the north from the river east to the highway on the west must enter and depart Karaffa off of Dennis Way.

Bus routes will be posted at the buildings and on the Toronto City Schools website, at www.torontocityschools.k12.oh.us.
