CADIZ - School has started in the Harrison Hills City School District, and the board held its monthly meeting Wednesday to review expectations for the year.
Administrative assistant Duran Morgan reported on the status of special education students. Preliminary numbers show 92 students at the junior/senior high school, 37 at Harrison East Elementary and 31 at Harrison North Elementary.
He added curriculum supplemental materials are secured for the year, covering elementary reading and math programs and math and science textbooks for junior and senior high students.
Staff and administration have enrolled in state support team sessions focusing on issues such as planning and writing. Plans are under way for additional iPad training for the faculty.
District Director Mark Kowalski reported starting the year with 19 regular bus routes, including 17 regular routes and two handicapped routes. Preschool started on Monday, and due to the numbers, a fourth route will likely be added Tuesday. Last year 14 children were transported and 27 children will be transported this year, Kowalski said.
He also reported ceiling and restripping work on the buildings, with some patching to be completed at Harrison North. Concrete has been re-worked at Harrison East, and electricity upgrades have been completed in all buildings.
In other business, new menus are in place in the district, with healthier options available, according to administrators. As a result, the district will gain reimbursement of six cents through the National School Lunch Program to offset increased costs of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
