WINTERSVILLE - Area residents still have time to register for the fourth-annual Wintersville Labor Day 5K. The event is set for Monday at Robert Kettlewell Memorial Stadium at Indian Creek High School.
According to John Cucarese, event chairman, runners and walkers are able to fill out a form and send it in or register the day of the race.
"The race will begin at 8:30 a.m., with walkers beginning first and runners starting at 9 a.m.," he explained. "Registration will be from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. at the stadium."
The race route will begin at the entrance of the stadium, where participants will run down Park Drive, across Main Street to Winters Drive and loop around at Family Dollar back to Main Street, he noted.
"They will do that two times," he explained. "After the second lap, they will finish with a final lap around the stadium to complete 3.1 miles, which is 5 kilometers."
American Red Cross Jefferson County Chapter volunteers will hand out water and assist with registration, and the Wintersville fire department will be on hand with an ambulance and personnel in case of an emergency.
This year's event costs $15 for participants, and the money raised will be donated to the Steubenville YMCA's youth membership and sponsorship program.
"The YMCA has done such great work in turning St. John arena around," Cucarese said. "They now have between 4,000 and 5,000 members, and this event fits right in with the wellness and health of the community. The YMCA has become such a success and is a great community resource.
"Any and everyone is invited to attend, from children to senior citizens," he added. "It is not a competitive thing. You can sign up to walk or run. It's an especially great thing for kids. They enjoy it and could potentially become lifelong runners."
The first 150 participants who sign up will receive a T-shirt, and several awards for best time by gender and age group will be given out at the end of the race. Food and beverages also will be provided.
"If we get more than 150 participants signed up before the day of the race we will order more T-shirts," Cucarese relayed. "We won't know the exact number until the day of the race."
New York Life will serve as the event major sponsor. Additional sponsors still are being sought.
"We are still looking for sponsors," Cucarese added. "Many are needed and any business is welcome to support this cause."

A Facebook page also has been set up for the event, Cucarese said. Those interested can go to "Wintersville 5K" to read about the event as well as fill out a registration form.
