Captured burglar sent to prison

STEUBENVILLE - Ryan E. Geary, 23, of 1394 1/2 Sinclair Ave. was sentenced to two years in prison on Monday by Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. after pleading guilty to charges of burglary and possession of criminal tools.

City Police reported a resident at 982 McKinley Ave. called City Police around 5 a.m. on May 30 saying she stopped a burglar in her house and was holding a gun on him. Officers went to the house and arrested Geary.

Brightway to host Day of Champions

SMITHFIELD - The Day of Champions will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday at Brightway Center, located at 2511 county Road 15, just outside of Smithfield. It will be free of charge and there will be a lunch served as well as snacks and beverages throughout the day.

"This will be an all-day competitive event for youth from 10 years old through high school to come together and enjoy engaging in physical fitness and educational activities," said Daryle Griffin, president and CEO.

Teams of five to 10 participants will rotate among activities, and all teams will come together for camaraderie and building friendships. At the end of the day, the team that has won the most events will be crowned the Champions of the Day, with each team member receiving a medal.

The camp, which was started as the Weekend of Champions at West Liberty University. is designed to develop leadership and character skills and promote physical fitness. David Lee Morgan, motivational speaker and author, will be the keynote speaker.

Buckeye Local Back to School Bash planned

RAYLAND - The Buckeye Local School District's Back to School Bash is planned from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the high school.

The event is planned to help students and their families prepare for the upcoming school year, according to administrators.

Officials will distribute packets of school/safety items to students in attendance.

The event also will include games, food and door prizes.

Floor hand training course offered

STEUBENVILLE - Eastern Gateway Community College and ShaleNET will offer a three-week floor hand training class from Aug. 19 through Sept. 6. The class will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Pugliese Center, 110 John Scott Highway.

Full scholarships are available for all veterans and unemployed Ohioans who qualify.

Students will learn basic skills needed for an entry-level position in the oil and gas industry. Floor hands operate well drilling and service rigs and also assist with general maintenance and connection and disconnection of pipes. The jobs are labor-intensive; most are 12-hour shifts for 14 days at a time.

Potential students must have a physical exam, drug screening and criminal background check at their own expense, which could cost about $150. Completion of the pre-screening does not guarantee placement in the class. A valid driver's license also is required.

Applicants can go to www.ShaleNET.org and register . In addition, packets with the forms can be picked up at the Pugliese Center. Registration is required by Monday.
