STEUBENVILLE - It was pretty simple for Richmond Post 740 coach Sam Davis.

"We ran into a buzzsaw," he said after Tuesday's 19-8 loss to Alliance at Vaccaro Field in the Region 7 American Legion Baseball Tournament. "We knew they were a good, solid team, but wow. They had them a day there and we weren't walking anybody.

"I asked Steve (Hawkins) how many hits they had by, I think, the fifth inning and he said, '20.'

"We just don't give up that many runs. We were throwing strikes and they were hitting them. I thought T.K. (Tyler Krantz) and Sammy's (Orr) stuff was fine. They (Alliance) just had one of those days. It's baseball."

Alliance scored three in the first, eight in the second and three in the third.

"They were right on top of it all day," said Davis, whose team will play Thursday against the winner of today's contest between Toronto and Cadiz at a time and place to be determined in the double-elimination tournament.

"I think the play at the end of the game epitomized the day. We hit a shot down the (right field) line and the first baseman makes a diving catch. What are you going to do?"

Alliance finished with 21 hits and left seven men on base. Post 740 had one error and used five pitchers..

"They have a nice team. It wasn't our day and it was their's," said Davis. "The play at the end of the game epitomized the day. We hit a shot down the (first base) line and the guy makes a diving catch. What are you going to do?"

Austin Horan blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning to left to score Josh Pasek, who had singled. Horan doubled one inning later to the base of the fence in left to score Pasek.

"I am really proud of our kids," said Davis. "They could have easily rolled over when it was 19-3. The kids kept battling back. We just wanted to prolong the game and see what happened because you never know.

"We're playing hard.

"We'll come back Thursday and see what happens."
