ABERNETHY, Thomas W., Jr., 83, of Steubenville, passed away on July 13, 2013, surrounded by his family. A host of angels led by his daughter, Katherine Marie, lifted him to heaven.

He was born June 16, 1930, in Johnstown, PA, the son of Thomas and Elnora Ford Abernethy.

Tom was an iconic figure in the radio industry and was well known as the "Voice of the Valley". He woke up his listeners as the morning personality on WSTV radio for over 40 years.

Tom was probably best known as the host of the "Phone Party" where he provided a platform for listeners to exchange thoughts and opinions on various topics. Tom was a key figure in the development and building of the School of Bright Promise/ Jeff Co Workshop where he served as board president for many years.

He and Grace were lifelong advocates for their son Tim and his peers to ensure their rights and education as individuals with disabilities. Their example paved the way to help many families who have children with disabilities. Tom was an avid musician. He began as a trumpet player and vocalist with the Army Band stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he met his love, Grace Rochelle. Through the years, he was also involved with the Steubenville Players, the Upper Ohio Valley Barbershop Society, Directed the Sweet Adelines chorus, and was a member of St. Peter's Choir.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Grace (Rochelle) Abernethy; sons, Tim Abernethy of Steubenville and Michael (Darlene) Abernethy of Roscoe, IL; daughters, Susan Rebich of Charlotte, NC, Jennifer (Peter) Taylor of Dublin, OH, and Barbara (Michael) Cummings of Canfield, OH. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, a twin sister, Peggy (Dick) Thomas of Ocala, FL and a brother, Robert (Deka) Abernethy of Altoona, PA.

Tom was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Katherine Marie.

Calling hours are Tuesday 4-8 p.m. at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville.

A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fr. Jonas Shell, celebrant.

Burial at Union Cemetery. There will be a vigil service 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Cancer Tear Fund, Trinity Health System Foundation, Tony Teramana Cancer Center, 3204 Johnson Road, Steubenville, OH 43952.
