Teen charged after doing doughnuts

STEUBENVILLE - A teen was charged by City Police with reckless operation of a vehicle after he allegedly did doughnuts in the grass at Murphy Field on Pleasant Heights early today.

Police were called about a pickup truck doing doughnuts at the park. An officer said portions of the grass was damaged.

A resident gave an officer a tip on where the truck was parked. It was found in the 400 block of Union Avenue, and the teen driver admitted to doing the damage, police reported.

Woman sentenced in elderly theft case

STEUBENVILLE - Ashley N. Zrinyi, 23, of 2202 township Road 378, Steubenville, was placed on one year of probation by retired Stark County Common Pleas Judge Richard Reinbold after Zrinyi pleaded guilty to theft from an elderly person and misuse of a credit card.

Zrinyi faces up to one year in prison if she violates probation.

Brilliant Water to hold budget hearing

BRILLIANT - Members of the Brilliant Water District will hold a budget hearing for the 2014 budget at 7:30 a.m. Friday. The meeting will be held at the water district office at 706 Second St.

Retail sales show slight increase

STEUBENVILLE - Retail sales in Jefferson County slightly increased in April compared to the same period last year.

Jefferson County Treasurer Raymond M. Agresta said retail sales for April totaled $63.1 million, generating $946,850 in piggyback sales tax revenue for the county. Agresta said piggyback sales tax receipts for April 2012 generated $942,008, based on retail sales of $62.8 million.

Monthly retail sales in Jefferson County for 2013 have averaged $62.23 million, compared to $60.20 million a month for all of 2012.

Smoke testing set in city's West End

STEUBENVILLE - The city's wastewater department will be smoke testing Monday through July 19 on Teresa Drive, Yale Place, Harvard Avenue, Princeton Avenue, Parkdale Road, Cunningham Drive and Sharmont Drive.

Assistant Wastewater Superintendent Chuck Murphy said the smoke testing will be done weather permitting.

"Questions about the smoke testing process can be answered by calling the wastewater plant at (740) 283-6000, extension 5002. If we are prohibited by rain from smoke testing the make-up testing dates will be July 22 through July 26," said Murphy.

Real estate taxes due in Harrison

CADIZ - Harrison County Treasurer Vicki Sefsick reminds residents of payments for real estate taxes for the second half of 2013 are due in her office by July 31. Manufactured home taxes are due by Aug. 8.

Those who have not received their second half bills in the mail can contact the office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at (740) 942-8861.

Blood drive set July 20

WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Women of the Moose will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 20 at the Moose Lodge at 844 Main St.

Doughnuts will be provided to morning donors and a hot lunch to afternoon donors. All participants will be entered into a drawing for one of three pairs of Kennywood tickets.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments may be made by calling Linda Porreca at (740) 264-4286 or (304) 737-1552. Donors should bring photo identification.
