Funds being raised for injured youth

July 6, 2013
From staff reports , The Herald-Star

WEIRTON - The family of a Weir High School student is looking to the community for help following a motorcycle accident which has left him paralyzed and in the hospital.

Josh Boyd, 17, of Weirton, was participating in a Motocross competition the weekend of June 29 when he got into an accident, suffering a broken neck, broken vertebrae and other injuries.

Boyd was set to begin his senior year at Weir High School this fall. He is currently being treated at the University of Maryland Hospital.

An email from Boyd's aunt, Crystal Boyd, explained his condition.

"There are no current medical changes with Josh at this time. He is still in critical but stable condition," she stated. "He is able to talk and breathe on his own, however he still cannot feel anything from his shoulders down."

A bank account has been established through Huntington Bank as the "Josh Boyd Foundation," and an online donation site has been set up through www.giveforward.com. The website will include updates of his condition and information about his life and his family.

As of Friday afternoon, donations through the website were at $3,134, with a goal of $50,000.

Among the current efforts to help are a T-shirt sale, with shirts up to extra large set at $15, and $17 for shirts two-extra large or higher. Shirts are available in both black and white.

They can be ordered by sending a check made out to "Josh Boyd Foundation," along with the size and color of shirt desired, to 604 Elmina St., Morgantown, W.Va. 26501.

Orders should include a name, phone number and return address, according to information provided by the family.

Funds from the T-shirt sale will go toward the Josh Boyd Foundation at Huntington Bank.

Updates on Boyd's condition and additional efforts also can be found on Facebook through the "71 Foundation" page.
