Post 34 grabs a victory

CADIZ - Post 34 had grown accustomed to swinging hot bats over the last few weeks.

That continued, for the most part, during the opening day of the Beast of the East on Thursday, but the dividends weren't realized as Cadiz dropped both of its games.

However, Post 34 returned to Mazeroski Field and posted its first victory of the four-day tournament Friday afternoon, unloading for a 10-2 victory against the Pittsburgh Crusaders Baseball Club.

"We've been hitting the ball pretty well, but this is a heck of a tournament, everyone's good and you've got to come ready to play every game," said Cadiz head coach Brandt Mazeroski. "It stunk to lose two (Thursday), but like I told the kids, it's the Beast. Today is a new day."

It actually took the Cadiz squad until the fourth inning before it got its bats going.

Post 34 exploded for 10 runs in its final three at-bats.

Bellaire High senior Spencer Badia had a big game at the plate and ignited the offense. He roped a two-run double in the fourth and then a run-scoring two-bagger in the fifth.

Chase Hopkins had a two-run double in the seventh.

Harrison Central product Dalton Rutter continued to make a living with infield singles. He dropped down two beautiful bunts and beat both out.

Martins Ferry graduate Andrew Chlon had a double, scored two runs and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

"We've only got a 13-man roster and it's tough to sit four guys because they're all good, but there's going to be a lot of baseball played this weekend," Mazeroski said.

The offense was plenty for recent Harrison Central graduate Nick Pelegreen, who was impressive on the mound in the complete-game effort.

"Nick had good stuff today and threw pretty well," Mazeroski said. "It's pretty impressive when a kid comes to you says, 'coach I want the ball.' Well, here you go."

At the dish, Pelegreen helped himself with a single, double and a RBI. He also scored two runs.
