Streets closed for derby, parade

FOLLANSBEE - Mark Avenue will be closed to traffic from 6:30 a.m. Sunday until the completion of the Follansbee Oil Can Derby early that afternoon.

Parking also will be prohibited on the street during that time.

State Route 2 from Mahan Lane to Cross Creek Road will be closed from 12:45 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 13 for the Follansbee Community Days Parade.

During that time Mahan Lane and Eldersville, Rockdale and Cross Creek roads will be established as the detour for north- and southbound traffic. City Police and security personnel will be along the route to assist drivers.

Free admission to pool offered

WELLSBURG - There will be free admission at the Brooke Hills Park swimming pool from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through July 12. The park also offers aqua Zumba each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., swim lessons for children ages 4 and up through July 15 and a day camp from July 24-26.

Toronto June fire report issued

TORONTO - The Toronto Fire Department had a total of six calls for the month of June, with an average turnout of nine members per call. The calls included one building fire; one vehicle accident with injuries; one watercraft rescue; one power line down; one dispatched and canceled enroute call; and one false alarm.

Members of the department completed the annual testing on all 1.5-inch-, 2.5- and 3-inch hoses. Total tested were 230 sections, which equals 11,500 feet of hose. Annual pump testing was performed on units 7512 and 7521. Several members of the department also received the required fit test for facemasks.

Titan football signups scheduled

TORONTO - Titan football signups will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday and July 12 and 10 am. to noon July 13 at the Titan fieldhouse.

Bantam players must be ages 7-8 and must turn 7 by Sept. 30. The varsity ages are 11-12. Anyone turning age 13 anytime during the season isn't eligible to play. Those playing the first year must bring their original birth certificate at the time of signups. The cost this year is $60 for one player; $80 for two players; and $100 for three players. North River Avenue church sets activities

Upcoming activities at North River Avenue Christian Church include:

Sunday - Worship service at 9:45 a.m.; junior church service in the junior worship area for youth ages 5 through fourth grade; Sunday school at 11 a.m.; youth group meets at 6 p.m.; and the evening worship service at 7 p.m.

Monday - The Boy Scouts meet at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday - Adult Bible study begins at 7 p.m.

July 15-19 - Vacation Bible school at the church is from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The theme is "Everywhere Fun Fair" with director Jennifer Meyer. All are welcome.

Activities set at Hill Top Presbyterian

TORONTO - Hill Top Presbyterian Church on county Road 46 will host Vacation Bible School from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and July 12. The theme is "Everywhere Fun Fair - Where God's World Comes Together."

Classes are offered for preschool through junior high students. There will be Bible study, music, crafts, snacks, games and a lunch provided at noon. Children in the community are invited to attend the two-day event. Registration will be from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on July 11.

Salvation Army aids prescriptions

TORONTO - Those between ages 18-64 who have no prescription drug insurance can call (740) 537-2210 for assistance. A team of volunteers will help clients apply for low-cost or no-cost medications. The free program has been providing assistance since 2002 at the Riverview United Methodist Church, 105 N. River Ave. Assistance is provided on the first Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. The entrance to the church is handicap accessible.

Those age 65 or older and who have no prescription insurance are eligible for the program.
