Mingo votes for a new roof

MINGO JUNCTION - Village Council Monday voted to declare an emergency and bypass the bidding process in having the roof on the Municipal Building replaced.

The roof has been leaking in numerous spots for several weeks. Steve Maguschak, temporary village administrator, said it will cost upward of $80,000 to replace the roof. He said the village has submitted more than $26,000 in claims to its insurance company for items inside that have been damaged, including computers, carpeting and ceilings.

Maguschak said roofing companies have been contacted about submitting quotes. He said the village is seeking quotes for a flat roof and a truss roof. He said he has been told a truss roof will be twice as expensive because it will require the moving of air conditioning units currently on the roof. A truss roof also will have to be designed by an architect.

Council will take the money for the new roof from the capital improvement fund and not the community complex fund recently transferred to the general fund.

Council is required to bid projects in excess of $50,000 unless two-thirds of council declares an emergency, allowing the village to bypass bidding.
