Norma Pertko

marks 100th

Norma Pertko, a resident of Genesis Health Care Brightwood Center in Follansbee and formerly of Wellsburg, celebrated her 100th birthday with family, friends and Brightwood staff on June 14.

Pertko said one secret to her longevity is hard work. She recalled that when she was 12, her grandmother said she was the best washer with a wash board because she could get out anything.

She entered the work force at age 14, working as a filing receptionist at a local glass house and married the same year. When she was 16, she gave birth to her son.

Asked advice she would give to younger people, Pertko said, "Be confident and own the room" and "Don't drink."

Pertko remains active at Brightwood, where she enjoys bingo and other table games, trivia and exercise, as well as shopping and having her nails done.

A music lover, she enjoys rock and roll and Big Band music, particularly Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Lawrence Welk.

The artist include Sandra Beitsing of Corapolis, Pa., whose works include scenes from Italy and Austria; Joan Heddle of Chester, whose works include scenes from Florida to the Virgin Islands; the late Dr. Mitchell Sagan of Weirton, whose works include retrospective on his life and family; and Sue Tate of Weirton, who has taught for 27 years.

The exhibit will be on display through October. The gallery exhibits are changed every three months, showcasing works from Tri-State area artists in a variety of mediums.

"When we opened this gallery, we knew Dr. Sagan's works were well known among some of the older residents in the Weirton area and thought it would be interesting to share his work with a new group of art enthusiasts," said Joyce Beatty, art council vice president and reception chair.

"Sue Tate has taught art for more than 25 years and told us showing her work in a gallery was on her bucket list. When we saw her work, we were happy to help her check that item off her list."
