Spill affected Route 22 traffic

WEIRTON - A spill on a westbound lane of U.S. Route 22 near the Harmon Creek exit affected traffic for about four hours Thursday.

Bob Fowler, Brooke County director of emergency management, said a driver transporting material used in hydraulic fracturing swerved to avoid an accident on the highway and a container of drilling oil lubricant fell from the truck when a strap restraining it broke.

Fowler said the material ranks low as a hazardous material according to guidelines set by the West Virginia Department of Transportation.

He said most of it leaked into a ditch near the Harmon Creek exit, but one lane was closed for a short time while crews with the Weavertown Environmental Group cleaned up the site.

The city police and fire departments and crews with the state Division of Highways also were at the scene.
