Warrant issued for hit and run

STEUBENVILLE - A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Toronto man who allegedly nearly struck a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy and a city patrolman while attempting to flee from the 400 block of Dock Street Sunday morning.

According to police reports, a Dodge Durango driven by Kenneth Leon Jett, 35, also known as "Hoffa," of 609 Trenton St., brushed up against Deputy Joe Lamantia, leading him to fire shots into its passenger side tire in an attempt to disable it.

According to the reports, the vehicle was so close to Lamantia that city Patrolman Matt Smarrella and two witnesses initially thought he had been run over.

According to the reports, Jett also nearly struck Smarrella and struck a van parked behind it as he attempted to flee. The officers said Jett didn't respond to repeated orders to stop.

Jett's motive for leaving the scene wasn't clear. The officers were responding to a report of loud music coming from the vehicles and children running around them at about 1 a.m.

Water service to be disrupted

WINTERSVILLE - Water service for customers of the Jefferson County Water and Sewer District south of Meridian Green will be disrupted Thursday while crews relocate a water line at the Jefferson County Airpark.

There also will be a 24-hour boil order beginning at noon that day.

Friday speaker change noted

WHEELING - Due to unforeseen circumstances, Cleveland Federal Reserve Senior Vice President Mark E. Schweitzer will pinch-hit for CFR President Sandra Pianalto at the University Economics Club luncheon at noon Friday at River City Restaurant, 1400 Main St.

Co-sponsored by Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce and the Center for Economic Philosophy at West Liberty University, the presentation will provide an economic update with particular focus on labor market research and the Wheeling area.

Schweitzer leads the bank's research department, setting the direction for economic research, selecting and developing staff, and briefing the bank president prior to meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee of the Federal Reserve System. Schweitzer's own research has focused on the macroeconomic impact of labor market developments and the identification of factors contributing to regional economic growth.
