WELLSBURG -West Virginia 1st Judicial Circuit Judge Ronald Wilson has been named judge of the year by the West Virginia Association For Justice.

Wilson received the award at the association's annual convention last week in Charleston. The WVAJ is comprised of more than 500 plaintiff attorneys throughout West Virginia and surrounding states. The association has presented the award to circuit and federal court judges in West Virginia since 1985.

"The West Virginia Association for Justice is honored to present Judge Ronald Wilson with the 2013 judge of the year award," said WVAJ President Scott Blass."For more than 30 years, Judge Wilson has fairly and judiciously served as a judge for West Virginia's 1st Circuit Court. His service has garnered the respect of West Virginia attorneys, his peers on the court and the citizens who have stood in his courtroom."

Wilson was pleased, but accepted the award with humility, saying he was no more deserving than any other judge in West Virginia. He also thanked the WVAJ. The judge compared his position on the bench to an umpire, and pointed out with humor that when one side is pleased with his ruling, the other side is almost always critical.

Fellow 1st Judicial Circuit Judge and 2011 award recipient Judge James Mazzone said Wilson was a credit to the 1st Judicial Circuit and the people of West Virginia.

"Judge Wilson is a hardworking, scholarly, but most of all, fair judge," Mazzone said. "I can't think of any judge more deserving of that honor than Judge Wilson."

Wilson exhibits fair-mindedness, an even disposition and willingness to make tough decisions - all qualities that make an outstanding jurist, Mazzone added.

"He's hardworking, and he's dedicated to the administration of justice," said Wellsburg-based attorney Frank Cuomo. "He takes his judgeship very seriously and he treats those that come before him impartially."

Wilson was appointed judge for the 1st Judicial Circuit in 1981 by then-Gov. Jay Rockefeller. He was elected to the seat the following year and was re-elected in 1984, 1992, 2000 and 2008.
