Toronto pounds St. John Central

BRIDGEPORT - The Toronto baseball team advanced in Ohio Division IV sectional play Monday with a 17-0 win over St. John Central.

Nate Stewart and Andy Miller combined for the two-hit shutout. Blaze Glenn ripped the cover off the ball with a three hit, four-RBI performance. The freshman had a single, double and a triple. Austin Lucas and Riley Keirsey each had three-base hits with Tyler Owens adding a double.

Toronto (18-4) advances to face the winner of Shadyside and River Wednesday at 7 p.m. In the other Division IV sectional game at Bridgeport, Frontier defeated Barnesville 6-5 to advance to face Bridgeport Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

District tennis held

DOVER - Steubenville Big Red's Stefano Lanni won two matches in the Eastern District tennis championships Monday at Dover High School, but dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Hiland's Spencer Yoder to end his season.

Big Red's Anthony Craig won a match, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 over Indian Creek's Jared Conn before losing to Hiland's Braxton Mullet 6-0, 6-0.

The Redskins' Shane Winland topped St. Clairsville's Chris Baker 6-1, 6-2 before falling to Dover's Sam Miller-Eshleman 6-4, 6-4.

Steubenville's Michael Rosachi downed Cambridge's Michael George 6-0, 6-3, then dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Coshocton's Jim Magness.

In doubles, Big Red's Annie Nehrbas and Jorge Dominguez defeated Justin Caniff and Fernando Prestes 6-2, 6-4, then dropped their next match 6-1, 7-5.

Weir soccer meeting set

WEIRTON - The Weir High girls soccer team will have a mandatory parent and player meeting at 7 p.m. Friday in the high school cafeteria for any girls interested in playing this fall.

Barkley nets ace

LISBON - William Barkley recorded a hole-in-one on the par 3 seventh hole at Beaver Creek Meadows Golf Course.
