STEUBENVILLE - Two political newcomers won their respective ward races in the Democrat primary Tuesday to secure seats on the City Council in January.

No Republican candidates have filed filed for the city's May primary or November general election.

The three candidate race in the city's Sixth Ward saw retired city police officer Robert Villamagna easily beat businessman Robert Chapman and Daniel Thorne Jr.

Villamagna finished the election with 422 votes while Chapman garnered 187 votes and Thorne finished with 21 votes.

Villamagna said he, "was very happy and anxious to get started helping the city."

"The ward race was a very clean campaign and I commend Bob Chapman and Danny Thorne for running for office," said Villamagna.

The Second Ward election saw Michael R. Johnson edge Lori Mason by a 124 to 80 vote margin.

Johnson thanked his family and friends, "including my brother and sister for going house to house during the campaign."

"I will continue attending council meetings to learn as much as I can about the issues facing the city," stated Johnson.

The winning candidates will take office Jan. 1.
