Man arrested after escape from EOCC

STEUBENVILLE - A man who walked away from the Eastern Ohio Correction Center on state Route 43, Wintersville, was arrested by City Police about three hours later in the 400 block of Westwood Drive on Tuesday afternoon.

Ryan M. Leeper, 22, of Urichsville had been at the EOCC for 34 days when he walked through a kitchen door during a routine kitchen cleaning and walked out onto state Route 43.

A city officer on patrol stopped to ask Leeper questions because of suspicious activity. The officer said Leeper at first gave a fake name but later admitted he was the person who walked away from the EOCC.

Leeper was sentenced to the facility for failure to register as a sex offender.

Leeper was charged with escape and falsification.

Bergholz man sentenced to prison

STEUBENVILLE - Joshua A. Brown, 23, of Bergholz was sentenced to 24 months in prison on Tuesday by Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge David Henderson after Brown pleaded guilty to attempted burglary.

Brown was charged with trying to kick open a door at a house on state Route 524, Bergholz, on July 11.

Brown said he was chased by the property owner after the incident.

Brown admitted he was out on bond from a Harrison County criminal case when the incident happened on July 11.

Brown said he has already served 31 months in prison on charges of escape and receiving stolen property.

Council to hold special meeting

FOLLANSBEE - City Council will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday to discuss possible changes to the 2013-14 budget.

The meeting will be held at the City Building. It had been scheduled for April 30 but was postponed.

Filmmaker to appear at WLU club meeting

TRIADELPHIA - Filmmaker Phelim McAleer, director of the documentary "Frack Nation," will speak to the West Liberty University Economics Club at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the university's Highlands Center.

McAleer will answer questions about the film, which is about natural gas drilling, at the end of the free program, which is sponsored by WLU's Center for Economic Philosophy.
