CADIZ - The Harrison County Fair 4-H Committee and members have been planning for the 166th-annual fair for months in preparation for the July 2-6 event.

Planning new events at this year's fair are Tim Tanner, Ohio State Extension/Harrison County educator and county director; Heather Keller, program assistant; Sarah Cross, educator; Joseph Maiorano, family community science educator; Katrina Bleininger, family nutrition program, junior fair adviser; as well as youth groups.

Some highlights offered by the junior fair board include a scavenger hunt with prizes planned on July 3.

Also, Kurt James Fun and Games will present Giddy-up Horse Races, have a zip line Flintstone Derby and bull rides at various times July 4-6.

There will be a children's petting zoo at the end of the fair week and an all-ages pedal tractor pull competition that will be returning for a second year of competition on July 6. A square dance, sponsored by the Milleson Insurance and Harrison County Farm Bureau, will be held July 6 as well.

The concession stand located by the fair exhibit building is to be manned by club members and advisers throughout the fair. Four-H families are to bring a 24-pack of soda or water to the 4-H food stand at project judging time, according to officials.

Tag-in days for junior fair youth exhibiting sheep, goats or hogs are required, and one will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds. The horse committee will have breakfast food and beverages available for purchase.

College bound 4-H members and alumni can take advantage of two local scholarships. Applications for the Earl Spragg Scholarship are due by June 10. Two scholarships are awarded typically by Dolores Spragg at the junior fair opening ceremonies and the king and queen crowning. There also is the new Harrison County 4-H video scholarship available, with guidelines available online or at the office, with applications due by June 14.
