MINGO JUNCTION - Steubenville's Justin Corsi went the distance and helped his cause on the hill with a single, two doubles and three RBIs in an 8-4 win over Indian Creek Thursday on Muth Field.

"Justin had a good outing for us," said Big Red Coach Fred Heatherington. "He had control of two good pitches. He got ahead of the hitters the whole game, threw strikes and made our defense play. He bounced back with a good effort tonight."

Corsi started a three-run second inning when he singled. After he was erased on a fielder's choice, Cody Saltsman doubled. Evan Westlake, who reached on that fielder's choice, stopped at third and then scored on a wild pitch.

Kai McClurg walked, putting runners at the corners. Lucas Herrington reached on an error that scored Saltsman for an RBI and Mason Heatherington reached on a fielder's choice to score McClurg for an RBI.

John Linn singled to open the third. Pat Pizzoferrato's double play ball was thrown away and he reached second. Corsi doubled to the right field fence, scoring Pizzoferrato and Westlake singled to left to put runners at the corners.

Starter Dustin Rath was replaced on the bump by Sean Smith. One out later, McClurg singled to score Corsi.

Steubenville (10-6) added two in the fourth when Heatherington was hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second by Bryan Pierro. Linn walked and, one out later, Corsi laced another ball to the right field fence, scoring Heatherington and Linn.

"We jumped out early, got up 7-0 and died a little bit," said coach Heatherington. "We left some runners on base and then we didn't get runners on base after we were up 7-0.

"We were lazy in the field when they scored their four. We can't do that. Good teams don't do that. When you get teams down, you have to keep them down.

"We're bouncing back and we're playing well at the right time."

Prior to the bottom of the fourth, Indian Creek coach Mike Cottis gathered his troops and told them that some timely hitting would serve them well.

Indian Creek loaded the bases with one out on two bloop singles and a soft line drive in the bottom of the third inning, but Corsi got out of the inning unscathed.

With one out in the fourth, Alex Young walked, Tanner Wise singled and both moved up on a passed ball. Dustin Rath reached on an error that scored Young for an RBI.

Zach Williams singled to load the bases. One out later, Cole Yeater singled to plate two and Sean Smith followed with an RBI single.

Nate Beatty backed that up with another single, but Big Red recorded the final out of the inning when Yeater was thrown out at the plate.

"We left eight runners on in the first couple of innings," said Cottis, whose team fell to 11-5 and will host Bellaire today and visit Edison at 11 a.m. Saturday in the OVAC Class 5A semifinals. "We couldn't get the big hit.

"I'm proud of how we hit the ball, but we couldn't get that timely hit and, obviously, that affects the score tremendously. They took advantage of their opportunities and we gave them extra with a few errors.

"They took advantage and we didn't.

"We're playing well. Today wasn't our best game, but we didn't play that badly. As long as these kids keep their attitudes the right way and they keep playing hard like they are, we'll be fine."

Yeater led the Redskins' 11-hit attack with three singles. Williams added two singles.

Big Red hosts Buckeye Local in an OVAC Class 4A semifinal Saturday at noon.
