National Library Week celebrates its many offerings

April 15, 2013
The Herald-Star

This week, the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County joins libraries in communities nationwide to celebrate National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources, according to Jennifer Cesta, public relations coordinator. "Often the heart of their communities, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their customers live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and re-engage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues," Cesta said.

A representative for U.S. Sen. Rob Portman will be at the main library on Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. to answer questions or concerns from the public.

The cooking club for the Schiappa branch will meet today at 6 p.m. It is $10 to participate and includes samples of recipes made from cookbooks found at the library. Call the library at (740) 264-6166 for details.

Join a book discussion at the Adena branch today at 5:30 p.m. or at the Dillonvale-Mount Pleasant Branch at noon Wednesday.

For children there are many opportunities, including:

-- Make and take a craft any time today at the main library. It also will be offered at the Adena branch Tuesday any time from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

-- The family can enjoy watching a movie at the main library at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

-- Children ages 4-10 can enjoy parachute play at the Schiappa branch on Thursday at 6 p.m. Registration is not needed.

-- Lego mania will engage children ages 8-12 at the Tiltonsville branch today at 5:30 p.m. and at the Brilliant branch on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

-- Play and Learn the Alphabet promotes early literacy skills for caregiver and children age 2-6. It will be held at the Toronto branch at noon Wednesday.
