From staff reports , The Herald-Star

WEIRTON -Weirton Medical Center has announced that an enterprise electronic health record system and new information system will be put into use Monday.

The purchase of a Siemens Soarian system represents a $30 million investment over seven years for the medical center, which helps to solidify its position as a health care leader in the Weirton-Steubenville-Route 22 corridor.

The system will enable WMC and its physician practices to securely share medical records, streamlining information to ultimately improve patient care. Physicians will be able to connect to vital patient information, like real-time medical monitoring, from anywhere in the world.

Included is Siemens Mobile MD, a health information exchange that will allow patient information, such as physician notes and test results, to be shared securely between the hospital and physician practices. It includes a new patient portal that will allow WMC patients to use the Internet to view their health information on a specialized site.

If a patient arrives in the emergency department, for instance, he or she immediately will be entered into the system, meaning all health information, including prescription information, allergies, lab results and cross-checking of medications will be streamlined from department to department.

This allows the patient to move from one department to another seamlessly. The upgrade includes Med Administration Check and Patient Identification Check, solutions which use bar code technology to identify the right patient is receiving the correct medication.

The system offers many benefits, officials said. It connects physicians to vital patient data so they have the facts needed to help patients in the most efficient way, and streamlined access to electronic information gives WMC the ability to improve patient care significantly by reducing the potential for human error, thus increasing patient safety.

An agreement that has Siemens handling all WMC information technology, also begins Monday.
