WHEELING - Hockey fans in the Ohio Valley can own a piece of Wheeling Nailers' memorabilia and support the American Cancer Society's Ohio County Relay for Life at this Friday's hockey game at WesBanco Arena.

The Nailers, who will face the Toledo Walleye at 7 p.m. Friday, will be sporting a different color team jersey during the game. The purple jerseys will bear the familiar Nailers' logo and a smaller patch honoring Relay for Life. Following the game, about 25 of these unique team jerseys will be auctioned right off the backs of the players who will be standing at center ice for the auction.

Bids will start at $150 per jersey. Fans can bid on their favorite player's jersey and those worn by a few players who are new to the roster this weekend. Craig Bommer, vice president of business operations for the Nailers, said players will be happy to autograph their jerseys for the successful bidders.

SPECIALLY DESIGNED — The Ohio County Relay for Life initiative hopes to get a financial boost following Friday’s Wheeling Nailers game at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling players will be wearing specially designed purple jerseys honoring the American Cancer’s Society Relay for Life that will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting Relay for Life. Shown with one of the jerseys are Craig Bommer, vice president of business operations for the Nailers; Beth Brinker with Relay Team Dam Man’s Crew; and her niece and nephew, Taylin Holt, 5, and Blaise Holt, 2. - Heather Ziegler

Bommer said the Nailers enjoy taking part in community events such as Relay for Life and look forward to seeing the results of Friday night's auction following the game. And $3 from each hockey game ticket will be donated to Ohio County Relay for Life.

Beth Brinker, who chairs the Dam Man's Crew, a Relay team in Ohio County, said Relay at The Rink is a great way for hockey fans to aid the fight against cancer. Donations can be made via buckets that will be passed through the crowd.

In addition to the auction, Joey Galloway, former NFL wide receiver and current ESPN analyst, will be on hand to sign autographs.

The Ohio County Relay for Life event will take place at 7 p.m. on Aug. 9 at Good Lake in Wheeling Park. The event attracts hundreds of participants and visitors who realize the importance of honoring cancer survivors, paying tribute to those who have died and continuing to fund cancer research.
