March 20, 2013
The Herald-Star

A group of organizations are combining to present a program Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. entitled "Making the Most of Your Backyard - From Flowerpots to Fields."

It will be held at the Schiappa branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.

The informal workshop is open to the public and will be hosted by the Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Ohio State University Extension and the Jefferson County Farm Bureau.

The workshop will highlight how these agencies can assist with making the most of the resources in your backyard, whatever its size may be.

Presenters at the session will provide information on services and resources available to the public, including conservation, backyard gardens, farming, forestry, watersheds and environmental sustainability.

Presenters will discuss ways that those with an interest in natural resources can connect locally with peer groups who share passions for gardening, sustainable farming, trails and greenways, watershed protection and more. The session also will highlight volunteer opportunities. The county 4-H program will host children's activities for the evening. There also will be ideas presented for a fun family picnic.

The workshop is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. For information, contact the Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District at (740) 264-9790.
