WINTERSVILLE - Scottie Bornyk figures a locally owned and operated business should, whenever possible, support other locally owned and operated businesses.

Since opening his newest venture, Scottie's Deli, at 762 Canton Road, Wintersville, owner Scottie Bornyk said he's tried as much as possible to find local suppliers, though in some cases that's been easier said than done.

"We're all local people, we pay local taxes," he said. "We're not a franchise, where the money goes somewhere else. We're local people and we support our community."

Bornyk said the deli, which opened in mid-January, fills a void he saw in the community.

"Nobody else around here has homemade brisket, roast beef, prime rib, pulled pork and Cuban sandwiches, just to name a few," he said. "We have Caribou coffee, too - we're the only people I know of in the valley who have it, but I thought I'd take the chance on something different. That's exactly what we're doing here, taking a chance on something different."

Bornyk also has Tuckers Tavern in Toronto, and had owned the Boathouse Restaurant & Marina, which is now closed.

"We're not your typical deli," he said. "All our salads are made in house, we don't get them off a truck. Our soups are made on site, too."

The menu also includes man-sized subs as well as sandwich rings. One of their most popular menu items is a meatball bowl, a round bread loaf stuffed with meatballs, sauce and mozzarella cheese. It typically weighs in at about 1.25 pounds.

"We sell 50 to 75 of them a day," he said.

Bornyk said they also go through about 80 pounds of pulled pork, at least 80 pounds of meatballs, 60 pounds of roast beef and 60 pounds of prime rib a week.

"We cook every day," he said, adding that they use many of his own recipes and offer daily specials. Scottie's also caters.

"We don't compromise on quality," he added.

Since opening, he said they've received a lot of positive feedback. "People are very happy we're here," he said. "We're providing a necessary service to the community."

Eventually, he plans to build a barbeque pit with an outside seating area as well as a bakery case. They also have lottery games.

The deli, which carries the popular Metro Deli line of meats, is currently open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and WiFi is available.
