Robbery reported at Smithfield bank

SMITHFIELD - Jefferson County authorities were investigating an apparent bank robbery this morning in Smithfield.

Witnesses say Jefferson County sheriff's deputies were called to the U.S. Bank, 1210 Main St., shortly after 9 a.m. Minutes later, sources with the sheriff's department confirmed a robbery had taken place, although further details were not immediately available.

Bank customers were being turned away, one caller reported.

Area man believed to be homicide victim

NORFOLK, Va. - A 24-year-old Yorkville native is the apparent victim of a homicide being investigated by the Norfolk, Va., Police Department in connection with a shooting early Saturday evening in a residential neighborhood, located not far from the Norfolk Naval Station.

The authorities are not releasing the victim's name, pending notification of family.

The alleged shooter is a 22-year-old Wisconsin native and Norfolk resident, Austin T. Greening, according to authorities.

Greening has been held in the Norfolk City Jail since his arrest Saturday evening, according to reports. He remains in custody without bond.

Police were called to the Norfolk residence of Greening via a 911 call at about 7 p.m. Saturday on a report that a man had been shot, according to reports.

Greening was scheduled arraignment today.

In addition to a murder charge, he is facing a charge in connection with the use of a firearm, according to reports.

Norfolk Police officials confirmed late Sunday they could not comment on any details of the alleged incident.

PERI to meet Wednesday

WINTERSVILLE - Jefferson County Chapter 5, Public Employee Retirees, will hold its monthly meeting at noon Wednesday at Zalenski's.

Guest speaker will be Phyllis Foreman, board member at Martha Manor. All retired public employees and spouses are invited to attend.
