WINTERSVILLE - One man was arrested and two other family members face charges in connection with a high-speed police chase that ended with a village police officer crashing a cruiser around 10:18 a.m. Friday.
Village Police Chief Ed Laman said an officer attempted to pull over a green Honda Civic for an improper registration. The vehicle sped off on Fernwood Road at speeds reaching 80 mph.
The cruiser was on Coal Hill Road when it almost collided with an ambulance traveling in the opposite direction, causing the cruiser to spin around and strike a post, Laman said. But the Honda kept going.
Laman said he pulled up at the scene and stayed with the officer, while other village officers continued to look for the car, with the help of Steubenville and Mingo Junction police.
A Wintersville officer found the car in the garage of a house at 103 Higgins Ave., Mingo Junction, Laman said.
Steven Hill, 21, of the address, was arrested inside. Laman said charges are pending against Hill but he faces fleeing and eluding and obstruction of justice. Hill's uncle and grandmother had hindered the investigation, the police chief said. He said those two also face charges of obstruction of justice but will be summoned into village magistrate's court. Steven Hill was taken to the county jail.
The officer involved in the wreck wasn't injured.
