CADIZ - Harrison Hills City School District Superintendent George Ash will close out his term of leadership on Aug. 1.

He will replace Joy Howell, retiring superintendent of the Jefferson County Educational Service Center.

He was hired by the ESC on Feb. 19, and the school board approved his resignation during Thursday's meeting.

Assistant Superintendent Dana Snider will take the superintendent's position.

Ash has been involved in Harrison Hills for seven years as a junior high school principal, an assistant superintendent and he's been in the superintendent role since 2010. He led the district through financial reforms and consolidations to maintain the district's solvency, as well as new programs and expansions, according to administrators.

The ESC encompasses seven school districts in Harrison and Jefferson counties. Duties include helping districts understand new state school initiatives, providing professional development for administrators and teachers, maintaining shared service programs and helping the school districts save money.

Ash said he is devoting all his energy to closing out his term at Harrison Hills.

"My complete focus has been on Harrison Hills and will be until August," he said, adding he will work with Howell and Snider to ensure a seamless transition in both districts.

Board President Deborah Kenny congratulated Ash and noted his vital role in the district.

"I'm very sad to see Dr. Ash leave," she said. "I have enjoyed working with him, and his vision and leadership have afforded the opportunities available to our students and staff. I know he'll continue to do great things at the Jefferson County Educational Service Center, and we wish him the best."

"It is with regret that I have to vote on this," said board member Melvin Allen, adding the district has benefited from Ash's leadership.

"There has been more harmony in the educational system in this county than I've seen in 45 years."
